Is Your Marketing Message Filled with “We, We, We’s”
Instead of “You, You, You’s?”
Recently, I attended a great business networking event with well over 3,000 people (plus or minus a few, if I did my math correctly) to listen to a speaker who gave a motivational speech on how his Olympic experience impacted his life.
Before the speaker vaulted on to the stage, the event’s sponsor had 10 minutes to talk to the audience. What an opportunity! The firm representative took the stage and spent the next ten minutes speaking in “we” language. “Let me tell you about the history of our firm…. We serve companies in these industries… and we offer these services to them… And, oh yeah, we’re different because our people work in teams”.
We…. We… We… We… We…
Opportunity lost! After about 30 seconds of listening to “We speak”, I noticed that many had already diverted their attention to their Blackberries. Imagine how they could have captured our attention if they shifted their conversation to “you’s” instead of “we’s”.
As a professional service firm, one of the best marketing strategies is to give potential prospects an opportunity to experience your firm and gain an understanding of how you could potentially help them. Imagine how different the results might have been if this firm used their 10 minutes to talk about the “3 employment issues all business owners need to know”, or “Basic contracts aren’t so basic” or even “How to choose an attorney”. By using an approach such as this, the firm would have taken their first step to build trust and credibility with over 3,000 people.
Are you talking in “We’s”? It’s simple enough to find out. Run your next message through the We We Calculator. It’s the first step to translating your message into one that engages your audience.
